A characteristic/finite element algorithm for time-dependent 3-D advection-dominated transport using unstructured grids

An algorithm based on operator splitting has been successfully implemented for solving unsteady, advectiondominated transport problems in 3-D. Specifically, the general operator-integration-factor splitting method of Maday et al. is applied to the unsteady advection–diffusion equation with source/sink terms. The algorithm incorporates a 3-D characteristic Galerkin scheme to treat advection, and...

Finite element approximation of high-dimensional transport-dominated diffusion problems

High-dimensional partial differential equations with nonnegative characteristic form arise in numerous mathematical models in science. In problems of this kind, the computational challenge of beating the exponential growth of complexity as a function of dimension is exacerbated by the fact that the problem may be transport-dominated. We develop the analysis of stabilised sparse finite element m...

Stability and error analysis of mixed finite-volume methods for advection dominated problems

We consider a convection–diffusion–reaction problem, and we analyze a stabilized mixed finite volume scheme introduced in [23]. The scheme is presented in the format of Discontinuous Galerkin methods, and error bounds are given, proving O(h1/2) convergence in the L2-norm for the scalar variable, which is approximated with piecewise constant elements.

A Mixed Finite Element Method for Constraining

The contribution of our paper is to present a mixed finite element method for 4 estimation of the velocity in the optical flow constraint, i.e., an advection equation. The resulting 5 inverse problem is well-known to be undetermined because the velocity vector cannot be recovered 6 from the scalar field advected unless further restrictions on the flow, or motion are imposed. If 7 we suppose, fo...

A stabilized mixed finite element method for the first-order form of advection-diffusion equation

This paper presents a stabilized mixed finite element method for the first-order form of advection–diffusion equation. The new method is based on an additive split of the flux-field into coarseand fine-scale components that systematically lead to coarse and fine-scale variational formulations. Solution of the fine-scale variational problem is mathematically embedded in the coarse-scale problem ...
